Faith & Technology: Should Christians Use Social Media?

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

In the Bible, there are warnings about the dangers of exposing oneself to immoral and harmful things, as well as the importance of being careful about the sources of authority in one's life. Technology, specifically social media, can be a tool for good or evil. As Christians using social media, we need to be aware of its potential harm to our hearts, and carefully guard our hearts against the immoral things we may see online.

One concern is the loss of traditional ways of gaining moral authority, such as being recognized and trained by a local church or denomination. With social media, anyone can become an authoritative voice without going through the usual means of becoming a recognized and accountable authority. Christians need to be cautious about who they listen to and accept as an authority in their lives.

Another concern is the exposure of one's heart to harmful things that can be found on social media. In the past, people had to go out of their homes to encounter immoral things, but now they are easily accessible through social media. It's essential to be mindful of what we expose our hearts to, and what impact it has on us.

Lastly, there is the issue of communication. The Bible warns against unwholesome, negative, and disrespectful communication, and social media platforms such as Twitter are often full of such messages. As Christians, we should use social media to build up and encourage others, rather than tearing them down.

Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to communicate certain things through social media? A lot of users find themselves saying things they would never say in person, and that's not good for the individual or the receiving audience on the other end. For some others, however, it's been a powerful tool to spread the gospel.

However, there are noteworthy concerns. First, social media has made it easy for anyone to become an authoritative voice without proper credentials or accountability. So, be careful who you listen to and follow. Second, we have easy access to things that are harmful to our hearts, and it's important to be mindful of what we expose ourselves to. Third, there's a lot of negative and disrespectful communication on social media, especially on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. As Christians, we should be mindful of what we say and aim to speak in a way that benefits the listener, according to God's definition of benefit.

Social media can have several negative impacts on Christian faith. Here are some of them:

  1. Exposure to false teachings: Social media can be a breeding ground for false teachings and heresies that can be detrimental to one's Christian faith. It's easy for anyone to share their views and opinions online, and without proper discernment, Christians can be exposed to teachings that are contrary to the gospel.

  2. Isolation from community: Social media can create a false sense of community and lead to isolation from real-life Christian community. Instead of meeting and interacting with fellow believers in person, Christians can spend their time scrolling through social media feeds, which can lead to a lack of accountability and fellowship.

  3. Temptation to conform to the world: Social media can also be a place where Christians are tempted to conform to the world's standards and values rather than standing firm in their faith. The constant exposure to worldly messages and images can lead to compromise and a weakened commitment to biblical principles.

  4. Negative communication: Social media can be a breeding ground for negative, ungodly, and unhelpful communication, which can be damaging to one's faith. Christians are called to speak with love and grace, but social media can make it easy to speak impulsively and hurtfully.

  5. Addiction and distraction: Social media can be addictive and a distraction from spending time with God and in His Word. The constant need for notifications and updates can lead to a lack of focus on what's truly important, and can cause Christians to neglect their relationship with God.

Social media is a platform where anyone can be an "expert" without any credentials or accountability. It's scary to think that we can be influenced by someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about. So, I encourage you to be careful of who you follow and what information you absorb.

Another thing is that social media gives us easy access to things that can be damaging to our hearts. We have to be mindful of what we expose ourselves to because it can have a significant impact on our emotions and well-being.

Social media can be used to spread hate speech in a number of ways:

  1. Anonymous accounts: People can create anonymous accounts on social media platforms and use them to spread hate speech without fear of being identified or held accountable for their actions.

  2. Echo chambers: Social media algorithms tend to show us content that aligns with our existing beliefs and preferences. This can create echo chambers where hate speech is amplified and reinforced among like-minded individuals.

  3. Viral content: Hate speech can go viral on social media, spreading quickly to a large audience. This is often due to sensationalized or emotionally charged content that is designed to evoke strong reactions.

  4. Trolling: Trolls on social media deliberately post offensive or controversial content in order to provoke others and spread hate speech.

  5. Lack of moderation: Social media platforms may not always have effective moderation in place to prevent hate speech. This can allow hate speech to spread unchecked and create toxic environments online.

There's a lot of negativity and disrespect on social media. As Christians, it's important to be mindful of our words and strive to speak in a way that brings value to the listener, following God's definition of what is beneficial.

Let's spread faith, positivity, and love instead of negativity and hate.

1 Corinthians 13:13: "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love."
